UPDATED: The nominees were announced by Sofia Vergara, Gerard Butler, Rashida Jones and Woody Harrelson on the morning of Dec. 15.

Nominees in the television and film categories for the 69th annual Golden Globe Awards were announced early Thursday morning from the Beverly Hilton Hotel by Sofia Vergara, Gerard Butler, Rashida Jones andWoody Harrelson with Hollywood Foreign Press Association presidentAida Takla-O’Reilly, one day after the SAG Awards nominations were revealed.

The first category, best supporting actress in a series, miniseries or TV movie, pits Jessica Lange (American Horror Story) against Kelly Macdonald (Boardwalk Empire),Maggie Smith (Downton Abbey),Sofia Vergara and Evan Rachel Wood (Mildred Pierce).

Julianna Margulies, Claire Danes, Mireille Enos, Madeleine Stowe of Revenge and Callie Thorne from Necessary Roughness will compete for lead actress in a TV drama series.

Original song for motion picture nominees include “Hello Hello” from Gnomeo and Juliet,“The Keeper” from Machine Gun Preacher, “Lay My Head Down” from Albert Nobbs, “The Living Proof” from The Help and “Masterpiece” from W.E.

Original score for a motion picture include Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Howard ShoreJohn Williams for War Horse.

Laura Dern of EnlightenedZooey Deschanel of New Girl, Tina Fey of 30 Rock, Laura Linney of The Big C and Amy Poehler of Parks and Recreation snagged noms for best comedy TV actress. The Flowers of War, In the Land of Blood of Honey, The Kid With a Bike, A Separation and The Skin I Live In will vie for best foreign film.

Midnight in Paris‘ Woody Allen, screenwriters from The Ides of March, Michel Hazavanicious of The ArtistThe Descendants and Moneyball‘s Aaron Sorkin andSteven Zaillian will compete for best screenplay.

Peter Dinklage of Game of Thrones, Paul Giamatti, Guy Pearce, Tim Robbins andEric Stonestreet have received noms for supporting actor in a series, miniseries or TV movie. Alec Baldwin, David Duchovny, Johnny Galecki, Thomas Jane and Matt LeBlanc compete for best comedy actor.

Best comedy series nominees include New Girl, Modern Family, Enlightened, Glee andEpisodes. Best TV movie or miniseries nominees include The Hour, Downton Abbey, Cinema Verite, Mildred Pierce and Too Big to Fail. Animated feature film nominees are Arthur Christmas, Cars 2, Adventures of Tintin, Puss in Boots and Rango.

Nominees for the best actor in a miniseries or TV movie include Hugh Bonneville, Idris Elba, William Hurt, Bill Nye and Dominic West. Best actor in a drama nominees include Bryan Cranston, Kelsey Grammer of Boss, Jeremy Irons of The Borgias, Damian Lewis and Steve Buscemi. American Horror Story, Boardwalk Empire, Boss, Game of Thrones and Homeland nominated for TV drama series.

Jean Dujardin, Brendan Gleeson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ryan Gosling and Owen Wilson nominated for supporting actor in a motion picture. Supporting actress in a motion picture include Janet McTeer, Jessica Chastain, Octavia Spencer, Shailene Woodley and Berenice Bejo.

George Clooney, Leonardo DiCaprio, Michael Fassbender, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt lead nominated for best actor in a motion picture drama.

Comedy or musical motion picture nominees include The Artist, Bridesmaids, 50/50, My Week With Marilyn and Midnight in Paris.

Romola Garai, Emily Watson, Elizabeth McGovern, Kate Winslet are among the nominees for lead actress in a miniseries or TV series. Kenneth Branagh, Albert Brooks, Jonah Hill, Viggo Mortensen and Christopher Plummer nominated for supporting actor in a motion picture.

Woody Allen, George Clooney, Alexander Payne, Michel Hazanivicous and Martin Scorsese for Hugo for best director of a drama motion picture.

Glenn Close, Rooney Mara, Viola Davis, Meryl Streep and Tilda Swinton nominated for lead actress in a motion picture drama. Jodie Foster, Charlize Theron, Kristen Wiig, Michelle Williams and Kate Winslet for motion picture comedy or musical actress.

Best motion picture drama nominees include The Descendants, The Help, Hugo, The Ides of March, Moneyball and War Horse.

The Golden Globes will be be broadcast live on NBC coast-to-coast Jan. 15, 2012 with returning host Ricky Gervais. Morgan Freeman will receive the Cecille DeMille Award.
